How we test & rank products

Our methodology is built on one principle: every recommendation has to be something we'd confidently tell a friend. Here's exactly how we get there.

01
🎯

We define the category

Before researching a single product, we define what 'best' means for that specific category and buyer. Best for a student budget is different from best for a professional. We establish clear criteria — performance, value, durability, ease of use — before we look at any products.

02
🔍

We cast a wide net

We start with the full market. For each list, we identify every relevant product currently available — typically 20 to 50 candidates. We look at bestseller rankings, expert roundups, and user feedback across Amazon, Reddit, and specialist forums to understand what people actually buy and why.

03
📊

We analyze real user data

We read thousands of verified purchase reviews, paying close attention to recurring complaints and consistent praise. A product with 4.8 stars from 200 reviews is weighted differently from one with 4.6 stars from 12,000 reviews. Volume and consistency matter as much as the number itself.

04
🏆

We cross-reference expert opinions

We consult specialist publications, lab tests, and category experts. For laptops, that means benchmarks. For skincare, that means dermatologist input and ingredient analysis. We don't take any single source as gospel — we look for consensus across multiple credible voices.

05
⚖️

We apply our scoring criteria

Each product is scored against our category-specific criteria. A budget laptop list weights value-per-dollar heavily. A baby monitor list puts safety and reliability above all else. We make these trade-offs explicit so you can decide if our priorities match yours.

06
✍️

We rank and write

Rankings are finalized and each product gets a concise, honest description — what it's good at, who it's for, and where it falls short. We don't bury the negatives. If a product has a known weak point, we say so.

07
🔄

We update regularly

Products get discontinued. New models launch. Prices change. We revisit every list on a regular cycle to ensure recommendations are still valid. If something better comes out, we add it. If a product declines in quality, it gets dropped.

What we don't do

We don't accept payment from brands to appear in our rankings.
We don't rank products higher because they pay a higher affiliate commission.
We don't include products we wouldn't genuinely recommend to someone we care about.
We don't hide negative aspects of products to make them sound better than they are.

A note on affiliate links

Some links on this site are affiliate links. If you click through and make a purchase, we may earn a commission — at no extra cost to you. This is how we fund the research that goes into every list. It has no influence on our rankings. The products at the top of our lists are there because they earned it.

Questions about our methodology?

We're happy to explain any ranking decision. If you think we've missed something or got something wrong, tell us — we take that seriously.
